What Are Cubs?

Cub Scouting started officially in 1916 with the launch of the Junior Scout section with the young Scouts being called "Wolf Cubs". In 1996, the section name changed from Wolf Cubs to Cub Scouts and today, Cubs can easily be identified from the green jumpers that they wear, hopefully covered in badges. As well as their green jumpers, cubs wear a coloured neckar which shows the Scout group that they belong to with each Scout group having a different colour. 4th Newbury wear a red and white neckar.

Cub Scouts are young girls or boys aged between 8 and 10.5years old who are members of the Cub Pack. The Cub Pack is run by The leadership team, who all give their time freely. The Scout Association provides specialised training for the leaders to ensure that they are able to fulfil their leadership roles. 4th Newbury Cubs meet at 6pm every Monday evening at the Richard Room which is beside St John's Church in Newbury. These fun filled Meetings last 90 minutes when the Cubs are able to join in lots of interesting activities. Activities include games, crafts, First Aid, Cooking, Map reading and lots more. Sometimes, the meetings take place outside when the Cubs do the chipshop walk, treasure hunts and photo quizzes around town, Sports activities in City Park or visit Snelsmore, Greenham Common or some of the other fantastic nearby locations. All these activities help the Cubs to gain their challenge and activity badges and more information on the 4th Newbury Cub Program can be found under the Cub tab.

As part of the fantastic and exciting Cub program, there are also regular special trips and camps. The Cubs have camped in Taunton where they enjoyed the Somerset Steam Railway and the trip to Minehead as well as camping on local farms near Newbury. Special trips have included Monopoly in London, visits to 10 Downing Street and the houses of Parliament as well as the BBC.
